How I Wrote my Autobiography

Chapter 30

The first thing I did was to assemble a set of file folders, one for each year of my life. I used hanging files in a Rubbermaid tub. As I am now 72, I have several sets of files. Then I went through my scrapbooks and memorabilia and filed what was spongeworthy. Then I wrote down the title for stories as I remembered them and placed them in the appropriate folders. As I remembered more events, I filed those also. When the mood/muse struck, I would write out the story behind a title. Often I would contact friends and family for confirmation or information about dates and facts of an event. I initially organized the chapters by the places I lived, as I moved around a lot. When I got married and settled down, I began using the year as a chapter.

I chose to use a website format, rather than a printed format. I did have to learn website building skills, but for me, the effort was worth it. I used Adobe Dreamweaver, but there are template based site builders that are easier to learn. I strongly discourage using WordPress, as it is not easy to use, despite being popular. The advantages of using a website include 1. You can keep adding to it 2. You can make changes if you need to 3. You can delete something if it really offends someone (I have done this several times. What I said was true, but it hurt some feelings) 4. You can correct incorrect parts. 5. You can correct misspellings and bad grammar. 6. It will never be finished until I am.

If you are not a writer, never fear. Just write down a story like you would tell it to a friend. If you want, ask a friend with good composition skills to proof read it for you.

This has been very therapeutic for me. My life has not been a straight line and the events of it often jumbled together. It helped me put my memories in order, much like straightening up a room.

If you choose to write your own memoirs, I wish you the best.
